Workshop Types:

Mister Goodmath offers a variety of workshops and staff development opportunities in the area of elementary mathematics (grades 2 through 6). Workshops are tailored to 3 types of target audiences.
rule02

1. Parent, student, and teacher workshops held in the evening as special PTA Programs or Math Nights.

The minimum amount of time for this type of workshop is 2 hours.
rule02

2. Straight staff development for teachers.

The minimum amount of time for this type of workshop is 2 hours after school or on Early Release or Teacher Work Days.
rule02

3. Lessons for students at grades 2 through 5 during the school day followed by staff development for classroom teachers once school is dismissed.

The minimum amount of time for this type of workshop is a full day with students followed by 2 hours with classroom teachers. During this type of visit, teachers learn 2 ways. First, they must accompany and become actively engaged with their class when attending the demo lesson for that group of children. Secondly, during the after school session teachers will be introduced to all strategies used in all demo lessons for that day.

Workshop Topics:

Workshops are available in 6 topic areas and will closely relate to the NCTM’s Curriculum Focal Points and Florida’s new Mathematics Standards that are termed Big Ideas and Supporting Ideas, at each of the K-8 grade levels. Demonstration lessons will correlate with Big Ideas as well as a varying number of Supporting Ideas.

Topic areas include:
  • Number Sense, Systems, and Operations
  • Geometry and Spacial Sense
  • Algebraic Thinking
  • Data Analysis and Probability
  • Measurement
  • Process Problem Solving Strategies

Workshop Descriptions:

Number Sense, Systems and Operations
This workshop focuses on an intuitive feel for numbers and their various uses and interpretations. A variety of alternative solution paths will be explored for each of the 4 operations with the goal of helping children and their teachers develop number sense and computational fluency with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions.

Geometry and Spacial Sense
The Geometry and Spacial Sense workshop places a focus on:
  • Shapes and their attributes
  • Relationships between shapes
  • Area and shape
  • Volume and shape
Algebraic Thinking
Algebraic thinking is addressed in a workshop that takes students into the realm of patterns and their ability to promote algebraic thinking. The “variable” is introduced through the construction of three-bean-salads and multi embodiment techniques are explored to solve equations.

Data Analysis and Probability
Data analysis and probability are explored through a variety of graphing activities that include the creation of Glyphs and stem-and-leaf, and box-and-whisker plots. Measures of central tendency covered are mean, median, mode, and range.

Measurement
The measurement workshop actively involves participants in identifying the attributes of objects perceptually, directly, and the indirectly through a reference. Activities take students through choosing units of measure beginning with arbitrary followed by standard.

Process Problem Solving Strategies
The problem solving workshop provides hands-on activities related to “process problem solving strategies” such as:
Draw a diagram
Make a table
Make an organized list
Experiment
Work backwards
Make it simpler
Guess, check, and revise
See a pattern
Write an equation
Use divergent thinking
