The
Author:The following Challenge was submitted
by Welleby teacher, Mrs. Sandy Pierce.
Mrs. Pierce is completing a task assignment for the Student Health Services
Department of Broward County Schools. Her task was to create mathematics
activities that would help raise the awareness of the dangers of smoking
cigarettes. Mister Goodmath sends "Kudos"
and a hugh "thank you" to Mrs.
Pierce and Broward's Student Health Services.
The Challenge:Babies
born to mothers who smoke cigarettes during pregnancy are
on
the average 7 ounces lighter than babies born to moms who do not smoke.
The babies listed below were born to non-smoking mothers. What would their
birth weights be had they been born to mothers who smoked?
Baby Buddy - 8 lbs. 6 oz.
Baby Felicia - 7 lbs. 4 oz.
