The Challenge:
Here's one for you younger Dolphins. Fourth and fifth you may submit answers but the problem is really for second and third graders. Last week Mister Goodmath was talking about money in the form of coins in one of Welleby's second grade classes. A student raised his hand and said, "my dad doesn't like to carry coins in his pocket because they're too heavy." From that comment, a new problem of the week was born.
A penny weighs about three grams and a nickel weighs about five grams. Which would be heavier for our second grade student's dad to carry in his pocket, thirty cents worth of pennies, or thirty cents worth of nickels?
Be sure when you e-mail Mister Goodmath that you include the following information. What was your solution (how did you get your answer)? What is your first and last name? What is your teacher's name.
The Solution:
Should
you decide to ponder the problem and accept the challenge, communicate
your solution to Mister Goodmath at "rooneym@mistergoodmath.org".
Great solutions will be featured on T.V. during WAVE morning announcements.
The Hint:
Consider weight in your solution.
