
The Guest:
The
following Guest Problem of the Week was submitted by Elizabeth Kraatz,a
senior elementary education major at Western Michigan University. Elizabeth
is a member of Western Michigan's Women's Hockey Team and tutors in a local
elementary school program called MathScore. This future teacher likes challenging
math questions and has sent us one of her favorites. Mister Goodmath sends
a big thanks, Elizabeth!!!
The Challenge:
Thereis a ship located off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia. It will be steaming south to San Salvador located at approximately 24 degrees north latitude and 75 degrees west longitude. If it travels at a speed of 15 knots (15 nautical miles per hour), how many days will pass before those aboard see San Salvador? Be sure to check out the hints for this one!!!

1. Each degree of latitude equals 60 nautical miles.
2. Consult the online altas link that Mister Goodmath has created to determin the approximate latitude of Norfolk, Virginia.
